Prior to Christ’s resurrection the Holy Spirit would come and
go upon individuals as God desired. But with Christ the Son ascending to sit at
the right hand of the Father, the Father sent the Holy Spirit to permanently
indwell every believer to accomplish all of the things we read about in
Scripture in each believer as God intends.
“And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and
has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in
our hearts as a guarantee.” (2 Corinthians 1:21–22, ESV)
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and
there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of
activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each
is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (1 Corinthians
12:4–7, ESV)
“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been
predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to
the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might
be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of
truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the
promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession
of it, to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:11–14, ESV)
Even the Word of God, which we are able to hold in our hands
and treasure in our hearts, was written by men moved by the Holy Spirit who
spoke from God as we read in John 14:26; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; and 2 Peter 1:21.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send
in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that
I have said to you.” (John 14:26, ESV)
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all
the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he
will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John
16:13, ESV)
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for
teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that
the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy
3:16–17, ESV)
“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but
men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter
1:21, ESV)
Scripture declares that our eyes were opened for salvation
by the Spirit of God and it is by that same Spirit that we are to continue to
live and daily walk.
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the
desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and
the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each
other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by
the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident:
sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife,
jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness,
orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those
who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who
belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians
5:16–25, ESV)
And realizing that even when we are weak and we don’t know
what to do or how to pray, that the Holy Spirit is our Divine Interpreter and
Spokesperson.
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not
know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the
mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to
the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work
together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans
8:26–28, ESV)
This same Spirit that helps us today is and always has been
God and was present with the Father and the Son at creation and will bring us
through to eternity.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the
deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis
1:1–2, ESV)
“The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who
hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires
take the water of life without price.” (Revelation 22:17, ESV)
Today in “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young (10/4)
I am the Creator of heaven and earth: Lord of all that is
and all that will ever be. Although I am unimaginably vast, I choose to dwell
within you, permeating you with My Presence. Only in the spirit realm could
Someone so infinitely great live within someone so very small. Be awed by the
Power and the Glory of My Spirit within you!
Though the Holy Spirit is infinite, He deigns to be your
Helper. He is always ready to offer assistance; all you need to do is ask. When
the path before you looks easy and straight-forward, you may be tempted to go
it alone instead of relying on Me. This is when you are in the greatest danger
of stumbling. Ask My Spirit to help you as you go each step of the way. Never
neglect this glorious Source of strength within you.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another
Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot
receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells
with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16–17, ESV)
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage
that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But
if I go, I will send him to you.” (John 16:7, ESV)
“Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by
power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord
of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6, ESV)
